The Rivers State Government has pledged to bear the cost of treatment for Miss Amos Joy, a fire-burn victim from Bille Community, who is receiving medical attention at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt.
The Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, gave the assurance on Monday, September 14, 2026, during a visit to the victim at the hospital.
Odu, who said she was informed of Joy’s condition shortly before the visit, commended the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Vincent Nwachukwu; the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor; cardiologists, nurses and other members of the medical team for their prompt response.
She said the victim sustained extensive burns and required urgent medical intervention to prevent complications, including infection and septicaemia.
According to her, the government’s swift response reflected the commitment of the Gov. Siminalayi Fubara-led administration to the welfare of Rivers residents.
“Because I believe and you all know that our Government is a Government that cares about people and has the passion to help out, that is why I have come to see her, give her encouragement and commend the medical team for taking action immediately,” she said.
The Deputy Governor also disclosed that she had provided the victim with financial support, assuring that the state government would continue to bear her treatment expenses for as long as she remained at the hospital. She said the medical team had succeeded in stabilising Joy and expressed optimism about her recovery.
Also speaking, Alikor assured that the victim was receiving the best of care at no cost and was making progress in her recovery.
He thanked the state government for the visit, noting that such gestures would boost the morale of hospital staff and strengthen their commitment to service.
Nwachukwu, on his part, said the Ministry of Health swung into action after receiving information about the incident online, evacuating the victim from her previous treatment facility to RSUTH. He commended the hospital staff for the care they had provided to the victim so far.
