NARD Fixes Doctors’ Call Duty Duration at 24 Hours

0

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has directed its members to limit call duty to a maximum of 24 hours, with the directive taking effect from October 1, 2025.

NARD President, Dr. Muhammed Suleiman, said in an interview on Tuesday that the decision is aimed at reducing stress among doctors and improving the quality of healthcare delivery.

He noted that the deterioration in doctors’ health due to prolonged hours has affected service delivery and exposed medical practitioners to serious health risks.

“Members will no longer engage in call duty beyond 24 hours. Call rosters that exceed this limit are unsafe and could result in mistakes, collapse, or even death,” he warned.

Dr. Suleiman explained that the directive requires every 24-hour call to be followed by adequate rest. “NARD is charging members to reject rosters that schedule back-to-back 24-hour calls,” he added.

The association described excessive call schedules as “unsafe and unstable,” stressing that limiting call duty hours will give doctors time to rest, bond with their families, and attend to other aspects of their lives.

He recalled the case of a young doctor in Rivers State who reportedly died after being on duty for 72 hours. “Some accounts said he had malaria and was on medication, others said they did not know what happened. But after 72 hours on call, he decided to rest and never woke up,” Dr. Suleiman said.

He further noted that doctors’ duties go beyond calls, including attending to patients in the wards, administering medications, and managing clinics, which make excessively long duty hours even more burdensome.

Nigeria, Russia To Deepen Economic Ties

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with Russian and by extension the BRICS platform, to promote inclusive prosperity.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by Dr Magnus Eze, Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
The statement was against the backdrop of a stakeholders’ interactive session during the visit of the Russian Chapter of the BRICS Women’s Business Alliance (WBA) at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.
According to her, Nigeria and Russia are poised to strengthen bilateral ties using the platform of the BRICS WBA.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said, “Though, Nigeria and Russia share decades of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity cutting across education, defence, energy, technology, and multilateral diplomacy, the moment demanded they go beyond history and look boldly into the future.”

She stressed that President Bola Tinubu-led administration had charted new courses through the Renewed Hope Agenda and 4-Ds foreign policy approach; encompassing Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.

The minister lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for hosting the event, calling her an excellent example of the transformative power of women in shaping societies and building bridges across nations.

While welcoming the Russian delegation, on behalf of the First Lady, she explained that its Chairperson, Ms. Anna Nesterova, decision to bring the BRICS WBA to Nigeria, affirmed her commitment to building inclusive economic partnerships.

This, according to her, underlines the central role women play in reshaping global business, diplomacy and investment for the 21st century.

Energy Week: Renaissance Energy Vows To Ignite Change In Oil Sector … Set For Decarbonisation And Africa’s Energy Transition

0

Nigeria’s Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has urged African nations to take full ownership of the continent’s vast hydrocarbon resources.
It called on the continent to action by positioning energy leadership as the key to unlocking industrialisation and sustainable development.

A statement by Mr Michael Adande, Renaissance’s Spokesman on Wednesday, quoted Dr Layi Fatona, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Renaissance, advocating this at the ongoing Africa Energy Week at Cape Town in South Africa.

“We are sitting on immense natural wealth, yet we remain dependent. This must change.
“Renaissance is here to ignite that change, starting from Nigeria and spreading across the continent,” said Fatona.

According to Adande, Fatona spoke on Tuesday during a high-level panel themed: ‘Frontier Plays in Mature Basins’, at the ongoing Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, South Africa.

Fatona said there was a need for deeper strategic thinking and the deployment of cutting-edge technologies to maximise existing assets.
“We must move beyond extraction to transformation. Mature basins like the Niger Delta, Sirte, and Lower Congo are not just relics, they are bridges to a cleaner, more secure energy future,” he said.
According to him, the key enabler for enhanced exploration and production in mature basins lies in advanced technologies, particularly improved seismic imaging and rig capabilities to drill high-pressure, high-temperature deep wells.
“Depleted reservoirs in the Niger Delta, Sirte Basin, and Lower Congo Basin can be repurposed for CO₂ storage, thereby supporting decarbonisation and the continent’s energy transition,” he noted.
Fatona lamented Africa’s longstanding inability to harness its abundant natural resources for meaningful development and the benefit of its people.
He called on leaders across the continent to deepen strategic approaches and embrace innovative work processes while deploying advanced technologies to optimise current assets.
“The opportunity is here. The time is now. Let us lead our own energy revolution,” he urged.

Renaissance, which acquired Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Renaissance Africa Energy Holding Company.
It is the operator of Nigeria’s largest upstream joint venture comprising NNPC Limited; TotalEnergies and Agip Energy, and Natural Resources

Supreme Court Ruling: INC Urges INEC To Complete Warri Federal Constituency Ward Delineation

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to complete the fresh units and ward delineation process in the Warri Federal Constituency.

Prof. Benjamin Okaba, Global President, INC, made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

His appeal is in response to INEC’s refutal of the suspension of the delineation exercise in the Warri Federal Constituency.

He said that the exercise should be in strict compliance with the Supreme Court order, adding that any further delay was unacceptable.

The INC commended INEC for the prompt refutal of the reported suspension of Warri Federal Constituency delineation exercise.

“We insist that continuous voters’ registration cannot be done in a constituency that has no wards, polling units and registration areas.

“The INC therefore appeal for the immediate completion of the fresh units and ward delineation process by INEC in strict compliance with the Supreme Court Order.”

The INC global president also called on the President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and the international community to take appropriate actions to forestall further attacks by the Itsekiris on Ijaws and Urhobos.

“To achieve this, the president should immediately prompt INEC to announce the results of their completed job and uphold the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary.

“The National Assembly should invoke its constitutional powers to summon the NSA and the INEC Chairman to explain their decision to continue registering voters in blatant subversion of a Supreme Court order.

“he International Community should prevail on the Federal Government and INEC to obey the Rule of Law,” he said.

Okaba further urged the Ijaw nation to remain calm but resolute in vigilance.

“The Supreme Court has spoken and clearly so.

“There are no electoral units and wards in Warri Federal Constituency of Delta until the results of the concluded fresh delineation exercise are announced.

“Let the will of the highest court in the land be done.”

In a statement on Monday signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the proposed delineation has not been suspended and no final decision has been taken on the matter.

Olumekun also clarified that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise is proceeding as planned across all the local government areas within the affected constituency.

INEC further urged all stakeholders involved in the matter to remain calm and peaceful while the process continues.

“We appeal to all the parties connected to the matter to continue to maintain the peace in the area,” Olumekun said.

The Supreme Court had, on December 2, 2022, ordered the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency.

In response, INEC began stakeholder consultations in February 2023 and completed fieldwork by July 2024. A draft delineation report was presented to community leaders during a meeting in Warri on April 4, 2025.

PENGASSAN Suspends Strike As Dangote Refinery Agrees To Recall Sacked Workers

0

The two-day old strike embarked upon by members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) to protest the sacking of 800 workers by Dangote Petroleum Refinery has been suspended.

The suspension of the strike, The Atlantic Bell learnt followed the agreement by Dangote Refinery to recall its workers dismissed for belonging to PENGASSAN.

The decision came after a two-day meeting, held on Monday and Tuesday between the Federal Government, PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery.

In his remarks, the country’s minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, reminded both parties that “the right of workers to unionise in accordance with Nigerian law must be respected.”

Part of the communique after the meeting revealed three key positions: Dangote Group would immediately start the reabsorption of sacked workers, and PENGASSAN would suspend the strike and end workers’ victimisation.

“Reabsorption of Workers: The Dangote Group management will immediately start the process of taking the disengaged staff to other companies within the Dangote Group, with no loss of pay,” the communique read.

“No Victimisation: Both sides agreed that “no worker will be victimised arising from their role in the impasse.”

PENGASSAN also confirmed that it would “start the process of calling off the strike”.

PENGASSAN had on Sunday announced a strike, directing its members to cut gas and crude supply to Dangote Refinery.

The strike was a direct response to Dangote Refinery’s sacking of workers for voluntarily joining the union.

Nigeria @ 65: Tinubu In Boisterous Mood Says The Worst Is Over For Nigeria … Lists 12 Economic Milestones Achieved So Far

0

President Bola Tinubu in a boisterous mood insisted that the sacrifices of the last two years have started yielding results, promising that the country is now on the path of recovery and stability.

He reassured Nigerians that the nation’s economic storm was beginning to ease, and declared that the toughest phase of the reforms was behind the nation while commending the citizenry for their endurance, support, and understanding.

The President In a nationwide broadcast on the occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, recalled that his administration inherited a near-collapsed economy when he took over the reins of power on May 29, 2023, but declared that the nation has finally turned the corner.

Tinubu stressed that as a result of the tough decisions his administration made, the federal and state governments, including local governments, now have more resources to take care of the people at the lower level of the ladder and to address their development challenges.

“Upon assuming office, our administration inherited a near-collapsed economy caused by decades of fiscal policy distortions and misalignment that had impaired real growth. As a new administration, we faced a simple choice: continue business as usual and watch our nation drift, or embark on a courageous, fundamental reform path. We chose the path of reform. We chose the path of tomorrow over the comfort of today. Less than three years later, the seeds of those difficult but necessary decisions are bearing fruit.

“In resetting our country for sustainable growth, we ended the corrupt fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates that created massive incentives for a rentier economy, benefiting only a tiny minority. At the same time, the masses received little or nothing from our Commonwealth. Our administration has redirected the economy towards a more inclusive path, channelling money to fund education, healthcare, national security, agriculture, and critical economic infrastructure, such as roads, power, broadband, and social investment programmes.

“ These initiatives will generally improve Nigerians’ quality of life. As a result of the tough decisions we made, the federal and state governments, including local governments, now have more resources to take care of the people at the lower level of the ladder, to address our development challenges,” Tinubu emphasised.

Pointing out that Nigeria was racing against time, the Nigerian leader maintained that the country must build the roads it needs, repair the ones that have become decrepit, and construct the schools the children will attend and the hospitals that will care for the people.

Tinubu stated that his administration was making plans for the generations, lamenting that Nigeria does not have enough electricity to power its industries and homes today, or the resources to repair its deteriorating roads, build seaports, railroads, and international airports comparable to the best in the world, because it failed to make the necessary investments decades ago.

He added: “Our administration is setting things right. I am pleased to report that we have finally turned the corner. The worst is over, I say. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief. I salute your endurance, support, and understanding. I will continue to work for you and justify the confidence you reposed in me to steer the ship of our nation to a safe harbour.”

Under his leadership, Tinubu said that the economy is recovering fast, and the reforms he started over two years ago are delivering tangible results.

According to him, the second quarter 2025 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.23 per cent—Nigeria’s fastest pace in four years—and outpaced the 3.4 per cent projected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Besides, the President boasted that inflation declined to 20.12 per cent in August 2025, the lowest level in three years, while the administration is working diligently to boost agricultural production and ensure food security, reducing food costs.

The President listed what he characterised as ‘12 remarkable economic milestones’ as a result of the implementation of sound fiscal and monetary policies by his government.

“We have attained a record-breaking increase in non-oil revenue, achieving the 2025 target by August with over N20 trillion. In September 2025 alone, we raised N3.65 trillion, 411 per cent higher than the amount raised in May 2023.

“We have restored Fiscal Health: Our debt service-to-revenue ratio has been significantly reduced from 97 per cent to below 50 per cent. We have paid down the infamous ‘Ways and Means’ advances that threatened our economic stability and triggered inflation. Following the removal of the corrupt petroleum subsidy, we have freed up trillions of Naira for targeted investment in the real economy and social programmes for the most vulnerable, as well as all tiers of government.

“We have a stronger foreign reserve position than three years ago. Our external reserves increased to $42.03 billion this September—the highest since 2019.

“Our tax-to-GDP ratio has risen to 13.5 per cent from less than 10 per cent. The ratio is expected to increase further when the new tax law takes effect in January. The tax law is not about increasing the burden on existing taxpayers but about expanding the base to build the Nigeria we deserve and providing tax relief to low-income earners,” Tinubu stressed.

According to him, Nigeria is now a net exporter, recording a trade surplus for five consecutive quarters, and is now selling more to the world than it is buying, a fundamental shift that strengthens the nation’s currency and creates jobs at home.

Nigeria’s trade surplus, the President stressed, increased by 44.3 per cent in Q2, 2025 to N7.46 trillion ($4.74 billion), the largest in about three years as goods manufactured in Nigeria and exported jumped by 173 per cent.

In the same vein, he stated that non-oil exports, as a component of Nigeria’s export trade, now represent 48 per cent, compared to oil exports, which account for 52 per cent, signalling that the country is diversifying its economy and foreign exchange sources outside oil and gas.

In the energy sector, he affirmed that oil production rebounded to 1.68 million barrels per day from barely 1 million in May 2023, attributing the increase to improved security, new investments, and better stakeholder management in the Niger Delta.

Furthermore, he said that the country has made notable advancements by refining petrol domestically for the first time in four decades and has also established itself as the continent’s leading exporter of aviation fuel.

“The Naira has stabilised from the turbulence and volatility witnessed in 2023 and 2024. The gap between the official rate and the unofficial market has reduced substantially, following FX reforms and fresh capital and remittance inflows. The multiple exchange rates, which fostered corruption and arbitrage, are now part of history. Additionally, our currency rate against the dollar is no longer determined by fluctuations in crude oil prices.

“Under the social investment programme to support poor households and vulnerable Nigerians, N330 billion has been disbursed to 8 million households, many of whom have received either one or two out of the three tranches of N25,000 each.

“Coal mining recovered dramatically from a 22 per cent decline in Q1 to 57.5 per cent growth in Q2, becoming one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sectors. The solid mineral sector is now pivotal in our economy, encouraging value-added production of minerals extracted from our soil,” he noted.

Tinubu said the current administration was expanding transport infrastructure across the country, covering rail, roads, airports, and seaports, revealing that rail and water transport grew by over 40 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively.

On the 284-kilometre Kano-Kastina-Maradi Standard Gauge rail project and the Kaduna-Kano rail line, he stated that these infrastructure were nearing completion, while work is progressing well on the legacy Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway.

According to him, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently approved $3 billion to complete the Eastern Rail Project.

Tinubu stated that the world has started taking notice of the government’s efforts, with sovereign credit rating agencies having upgraded their outlook for Nigeria, recognising its improved economic fundamentals.

The stock market, the President said, is experiencing an unprecedented boom, rising from an all-share index of 55,000 points in May 2003 to 142,000 points as of September 26, 2025, while at its last Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, the Central Bank slashed interest rates for the first time in five years, expressing confidence in the country’s macroeconomic stability.

As Nigerians reflect on the significance of the day and their journey of nationhood since October 1, 1960, Tinubu paid tributes to Nigeria’s founding fathers, including: Herbert Macaulay, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Margaret Ekpo, Anthony Enahoro, Ladoke Akintola, Michael Okpara, Aminu Kano, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and other nationalists—who believed it was Nigeria’s manifest destiny to lead the entire black race as the largest black nation on earth.

While Nigeria may not have achieved all the lofty dreams of its forebearers, the President assured that it has not strayed too far from them, stressing that the nation has made tremendous progress in economic growth, social cohesion, and physical development.

“Our country has experienced both the good and the bad times in its 65 years of nationhood, as is normal for every nation and its people,” he stated.

On security, the Nigerian leader stated that his administration was working diligently to enhance national security, ensuring the economy experiences improved growth and performance.

He said that the officers and men of the nation’s Armed Forces and other security agencies were working tirelessly and making significant sacrifices to keep Nigeria safe.

“They are winning the war against terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes. We see their victories in their blood and sweat to stamp out Boko Haram Terror in North-East, IPOB/ESN terror in South East and banditry and kidnapping.

“We must continue to celebrate their gallantry and salute their courage on behalf of a grateful nation. Peace has returned to hundreds of our liberated communities in North-west and North-east, and thousands of our people have returned safely to their homes,” he stated.

Speaking to young people, he described them as the future and the greatest assets of the country, urging them to continue to dream big, innovate, and conquer more territories in their various fields of science, technology, sports, and the art and creative sector.

He highlighted the impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), positing that approximately 510,000 students across 36 states and the FCT have benefited from this initiative, covering 228 higher institutions.

“As of September 10, the total loan disbursed was N99.5 billion, while the upkeep allowance stood at N44.7 billion. Credicorp, another initiative of our administration, has granted 153,000 Nigerians N30 billion affordable loans for vehicles, solar energy, home upgrades, digital devices, and more.

“YouthCred, which I promised last June, is a reality, with tens of thousands of NYSC members now active beneficiaries of consumer credit for resettlement,” he disclosed, acknowledging that the reforms have come with some pains.

“Fellow Nigerians, I have always candidly acknowledged that these reforms have come with some temporary pains. The biting effects of inflation and the rising cost of living remain a significant concern to our government.

“However, the alternative of allowing our country to descend into economic chaos or bankruptcy was not an option. Our macro-economic progress has proven that our sacrifices have not been in vain. Together, we are laying a new foundation cast in concrete, not on quicksand.

“However, the alternative of allowing our country to descend into economic chaos or bankruptcy was not an option. Our macro-economic progress has proven that our sacrifices have not been in vain. Together, we are laying a new foundation cast in concrete, not on quicksand.

“The accurate measure of our success will not be limited to economic statistics alone, but rather in the food on our families’ tables, the quality of education our children receive, the electricity in our homes, and the security in our communities. Let me assure you of our administration’s determination to ensure that the resources we have saved and the stability we have built are channelled into these critical areas.

“Today, the governors at the state level, and the local government autonomy are yielding more developments. Therefore, on this 65th Anniversary of Our Independence, my message is hope and a call to action.

“The federal government will continue to do its part to fix the plumbing in our economy. Now, we must all turn on the taps of productivity, innovation, and enterprise, just like the Ministry of Interior has done with our travel passports, by quickening the processing,” he added.

Remarks Against Tinubu: Sowere To Reappear In Court, October 27, Judge Rules

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the arraignment of Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, until October 27 2025.

Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter on Tuesday to afford Sowore adequate facility to prepare for his defence.

Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2019 and 2023, is facing a five-count charge.

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Federal Government’s behalf, had sued Sowore, X Incorp. (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) Incorp. as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

The charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, was dated September 16.

Sowore was alleged to have made a false claim against the person of President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” on his X and Facebook accounts.

When the matter was called on Tuesday, Sowore was in court, as well as counsel for Meta.

However, there was no representation for X.

The DSS counsel, Mohammed Abubakar, applied that the charge be read to the defendants so they could take their plea.

But Sowore’s lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, opposed the application.

The lawyer said the court bailiff was yet to effect the service of the charge on his client.

Besides, he argued that in criminal trial where three defendants are listed, the appearance of the 2nd defendant (X) is sacrosanct.

He said ‘X’ must be represented in court to ensure that all the defendants had been properly served.

From the court record, the judge confirmed that ‘X’ and Meta had been served electronically via their email addresses.

The DSS lawyer then applied that the charge be served on Sowore in the open and Justice Umar granted the request after it was not opposed by Abubakar and Mofesomo Tayo-Oyetibo, SAN, who appeared for Meta.

Abubakar, however, sought an adjournment to afford the 1st defendant adequate time and opportunity to defend himself in line with Section 282(6) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

Justice Umar adjourned the matter until October 27 for arraignment.

The charge was filed few days after an earlier request by the DSS for the alleged defamatory message posted by Sowore to be pulled down on his Facebook and X handles.

In the charge, Sowore is accused of contravening the provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024.

Count one of the charge alleged that Sowore, on or about August 25, did use his official X handle page, @Yele Sowore, to send out a message/tweet.

The message is said to be, “THIS CRIMINAL @ OFFICIAL PBAT ACTUALLY WENT TO BRAZIL TO STATE THAT THERE IS NO MORE CORRUPTION UNDER HIS REGIME IN NIGERIA. WHAT AUDACITY TO LIE SHAMELESSLY!,”

The message, which he knew to be false, was posted “for the purpose of causing a breakdown of law and order in the country, especially among individuals, who hold divergent views on the personality of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR).”

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 24 (1) (b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024, among other counts.
