Opobo Kingdom in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State has erupted in a festive mood as the historic community begins an 11-day programme of cultural and traditional activities leading to the coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja as Amanyanabo of Opobo.
Indigenes of the kingdom and visitors from across the country have continued to arrive in large numbers, creating a carnival-like atmosphere in Opobo Town, while businesses are recording increased patronage as the coronation draws closer.
The Atlantic Bell gathered that accommodation facilities in the kingdom are already under considerable pressure as guests continue to troop into the community for the historic event.
To complement available commercial accommodation, some indigenes of the kingdom are reportedly offering free accommodation to prominent guests and other visitors expected to attend the coronation.
The 11-day festivities commenced on Friday with a series of cultural and traditional rites, including the Asimini announcement, cannon firing and the telling of the ancient bell, setting the tone for a celebration deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Opobo people.
The celebrations continued into Saturday night with an all-night performance by the Gburu Gburu, the collective group of the Nwaoatam masquerade. The spectacular display, which featured traditional music, dance and masquerade performances, reportedly held guests spellbound until the early hours of Sunday.
Saturday also witnessed the hoisting of the flags of the various Polo of the kingdom, further showcasing the rich cultural identity and traditional structure of Opobo.
With several days of activities still ahead, expectations are high that thousands of visitors will converge on the kingdom to witness the coronation ceremony, which is expected to feature an elaborate display of Opobo’s rich cultural heritage and traditional pageantry.
The celebrations will culminate on Saturday with the coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, alongside a traditional boat regatta and a grand display of loyalty and solidarity by the people of Opobo Kingdom.
The coronation is expected to bring together traditional rulers, political leaders, dignitaries, cultural groups, indigenes and visitors in what promises to be one of the kingdom’s most significant cultural gatherings in recent years.
