The forthcoming coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, will provide an opportunity to showcase the rich heritage, culture, history and traditional institutions of Opobo Kingdom, the Opobo Council of Chiefs has said.
The council, which announced September 26, 2026, as the date for the grand coronation in Opobo Town, said the event would celebrate the kingdom’s enduring traditions and provide a platform for telling its wider story to audiences within and outside Nigeria.
The Vice Chairman of the council, Alabo Princewill N. Wogo Dappa, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) complex while speaking on preparations for the ceremony.
He said the coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom, would mark the continuation of one of the Niger Delta’s most historic traditional institutions.
According to him, the throne of King Jaja of Opobo carries a legacy associated with courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership, making the coronation a significant moment in the history of the kingdom.
“The coronation itself will showcase the rich heritage, traditional institutions, culture and history of Opobo,” Dappa said. He added that the ceremony would provide an opportunity for Opobo people at home and in the diaspora to come together in unity around the throne and the future of the kingdom.
The council’s announcement followed a series of diplomatic and traditional visits undertaken as part of preparations for the event. Dappa said the engagements included visits to respected traditional rulers and former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to strengthen historic relationships and convey formal invitations.
He appealed to the media to help tell the wider story of Opobo, describing it as a story of “heritage, resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity.”
The council invited the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join in celebrating the occasion.
It also urged residents and visitors to cooperate with arrangements for security, traffic, protocol and general coordination as guests arrive from within and outside Nigeria.
The coronation is scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 26, in Opobo Town.
