Rivers Monthly Environmental Exercise: Why Gov Fubara Ordered A Halt

The monthly sanitation exercise in Rivers State adopted for a cleaner and more friendly environment would not hold this Saturday, October 4, as earlier announced by the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA).

The postponement of the exercise, The Atlantic Bell learnt is to enable the Agency adopt a more standard and pragmatic approach to the issue of waste management in the state.

Chairman of the board of RIWAMA, Samuel Nwanosike told newsmen shortly after emerging from a meeting with the state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, that the monthly sanitation exercise will be put on hold until further notice. He said the governor directed that the agency should adopt a humane approach to the exercise.

“The governor wants a different approach and to put a human face and make sure that the people see through waste management and to give them the best of it”.

He said: “Subsequently, we also want to seize the opportunity to inform the people of Rivers State that the initially proposed environmental sanitation exercise scheduled to hold on October 4, is hereby put off until further notice. This is to allow us build more capacity in tackling the issues of waste management in the State.”

He said that Governor Fubara has pledged sustainable environmental cleanliness as the Chairman, Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, announced the suspension of the mandatory sanitation exercise in the state shortly after meeting with the governor.

Nwanosike, a former Chairman of Ikwerre Local Givernment Area, had on assumption of office as the RIWAMA boss announced compulsory monthly sanitation exercise amidst public outcry against the approach.

Nwanosike said the governor is desirous of clean healthy environment for the people and had ordered actions to be taken against some challenges like the habit of blocking drains.

He said Gov. Fubara also assured the agency of all the support it needs to keep the environment clean and to carry out its daily activities adding that the governor has promised to assist the agency with new dumpsites.

He said: “It is the governor’s wish that the people live in good health. He is also aware of the little challenges as it concerns blocking of the drains which are activities caused by our people who use their refuse to block our drains.

“His Excellency has also given directives on the actions to take and after now Rivers people will enjoy the dividends of democracy in waste management.

“The actions of making sure that our refuse are properly managed, provision of new dump sites, properly managed dump sites and giving us all the infrastructure we need to make sure that we are able to give the needed results.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Agency, Dr. Ibimila Wokoma said they met with the governor to brief him on the activities of the agency.

The National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) says Nigeria is ready to showcase 105 innovations in London that will attract foreign investments and provide solutions to some challenges facing humans.

The Director-General of NBTI, Dr Kazeem Raji made this known during a world press conference on the Grand Finale of NextGen Innovation Challenge 2025 on Thursday in Abuja.

“On Thursday, Oct. 9, in the city of London, 105 of Nigeria’s most outstanding innovators, selected from over 3,000 ground-breaking entries, will converge at the Hilton London Paddington.

“They will pitch revolutionary solutions across HealthTech, AgriTech, FinTech, Clean Energy, Artificial Intelligence and more before an esteemed gathering of global investors, policymakers, and development partners.

“This monumental initiative, powered by NBTI in partnership with UKALD London, signals a new era for Nigeria’s innovation-driven economic transformation and places Nigeria at the forefront of global innovation diplomacy,” Raji said.

According to him, they will showcase a smart wearable Bra-X for early detection of breast cancer, a ventilator capable of supporting six patients simultaneously, AI-controlled drones for precision farming and pest control.

“Others are Affordable clean energy solutions for underserved communities, Next-generation FinTech applications for inclusive finance and much more, touching every critical sector of our economy and human development.”

Raji explained that the reason for holding the event in London is because London is a hub of global capital and innovation that provides a platform to connect with global venture capitalists.

He said the development would be an opportunity to present innovators’ ideas to diaspora investors looking to reinvest back home, and network with European industry leaders and bilateral development opportunities.

“I want to further reiterate and state that the highlights of the NextGen Innovation Grand Finale include, Innovation Pitches from 105 innovators with scalable, investable solutions.

“Consortium Project Showcase: Interface Africa, Ogoni Land Renewal and the $1 billion Dollar Innovate Africa Israel/BIPVco Solar Project.

Lassa Fever: Nigeria records 166 deaths In 2025 … Fatality Rises Above 2024 Figure –NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says 166 people died from Lassa fever between January and September 2025, with the case fatality rate now higher than 2024 year.

This is contained in Epidemiological Week 37, covering Sept. 8 to 14, cited on the NCDC website on Thursday.

The Public Health agency said that 895 confirmed cases were recorded across 21 states and 106 local government areas.

It said that this represents a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.5 per cent, compared to 16.9 per cent reported within the same period in 2024.

The agency noted that while suspected and confirmed cases were fewer than those reported last year, more patients are dying because of late presentation and poor health-seeking behaviour, often linked to the high cost of treatment.

According to NCDC, Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba and Ebonyi states continue to account for 90 per cent of all confirmed cases, with Ondo alone responsible for a third of infections.

The NCDC also confirmed that no new healthcare worker was infected during the reporting week.

However, it warned that poor environmental sanitation, weak awareness in high-burden communities and delayed treatment continue to fuel the spread and severity of the disease.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus.

It is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, particularly the multi-mammate rat.

Human-to-human transmission can also occur, especially in healthcare settings without adequate infection control.

Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and in severe cases, unexplained bleeding.

The disease is endemic in parts of West Africa, with Nigeria bearing the highest burden.

To strengthen control, the NCDC said it had deployed 10 rapid response teams to affected states, launched new infection prevention and control (IPC) training modules and supported clinical management fellowship programmes in collaboration with local and international partners.

The agency urged states to intensify community engagement and preventive campaigns and reminded healthcare workers to maintain high suspicion and initiate early treatment when symptoms appear.

The suit filed by members of the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, who were appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara but later removed by the former Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has been struck out.

Justice Frank Onyiri, a judge of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Thursday struck out the suit filed by the Chairman and members of the commission.

The claimants, Reverend Goodlife Iduoku Ben, Amadi Christian Echele, Chimenem Wisdom Jerome, and three others, had approached the court to challenge what they described as their unlawful removal and replacement with another chairman and members of the commission.

When the matter came up for judgment on Thursday, counsel to the claimants, Kelechi Ubani, informed the court of a notice of discontinuance filed at the request of his clients.

Ubani explained that his clients made what he called a “painful decision” to withdraw the suit in the interest of peace and progress in the state.

However, counsel to the 1st–12th defendants opposed the motion, urging the court to dismiss the case instead of striking it out.

In his ruling, presiding judge Justice Frank Onyiri dismissed the defendants’ objection, describing their motion as baseless.

Citing relevant legal authorities in support of the claimants’ application, Justice Onyiri struck out the suit under Order 25, Rule 1.

The court, however, declined to award costs or to dismiss the case as requested by the defendants, commending the claimants’ decision to withdraw the matter as “noble.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he plans to step aside for another presidential aspirant in the build-up to the 2027 elections.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku had stated that he would only withdraw from the race if a younger contender emerges victorious over him in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary.

 

“If I run for office, and a young man defeats me, I will accept that. The party we have joined now prioritises youth and women,” he had said.

However, in a statement released on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed the reports, describing them as a distortion of his recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service.

Ibe clarified that a thorough review of the video and transcripts of the interview revealed that Atiku neither said nor implied any intention to step down for anyone.

The statement reads, “After a thorough review of both the video and transcripts of the interview – in the original Hausa and the English translation – it is evident that at no point did the former Vice President expressly state, suggest, or even imply that he intends to step down for anyone.

What Atiku Abubakar clearly and unambiguously said was that young people, as well as other prospective presidential aspirants, are free to enter the contest. He further stressed that if a young candidate were to emerge through a competitive primary, he would readily support such a candidate without any hesitation.

“While interpretative journalism is a legitimate aspect of reporting, stretching interpretation to the point of mischief is unacceptable and must not be encouraged.

“For the record, therefore, the insinuations attributed to Waziri Adamawa from his BBC Hausa interview are inaccurate and do not reflect what he actually said.”

Invest in Industrial, Oil Sectors To Accelerate GDP Growth, Experts Urge FG

Economists have advised the federal government to channel more investments into the industrial and crude oil sectors as part of strategies to sustain Nigeria’s economic growth.

Prof. Sherifdeen Tella, Lecturer of Economics, Babcock University, told the reporters in Lagos on Thursday that stronger interventions in the industrial sector would accelerate Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.

“The government should empower domestic production firms in critical areas with funds that can be repaid in the future.

“This support can be likened to the U.S. bailout for industrial firms during the 2008 global economic meltdown,” Tella said.

He added that subsidising energy, particularly electricity and petrol, would stimulate growth in the productive sectors.

He also said that innovations to tackle oil theft and boost crude production could improve the nation’s export earnings.

“This will encourage more players to venture into the sector and increase exports to the global market, thereby earning more revenue for the government,” he said.

In his contribution, Dr Uju Ogubunka, former Executive Secretary of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), said improved security was vital to sustaining growth.

“Having a secured economy is important, where people can earn their livelihood without molestation.

“For instance, our hinterland is not as secure as expected, and this has reduced agricultural production with direct consequences in the market,” Ogubunka said.

He also urged the government to prioritise infrastructure renewal.

“The government should invest more in regular electricity supply and the completion of railway projects.

“These will attract more investment and facilitate economic development,” he said.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its second quarter of 2025 GDP report, said Nigeria grew by 4.23 per cent in real terms year-on-year.

The report noted that the growth rate was higher than the 3.48 per cent recorded in the second quarter of 2024, underscoring the need to consolidate gains with stronger reforms and targeted investments.

Artist Urges Preservation Of African Folklore

Legendary Nigerian artist and researcher, Zainab Odemwingie, has called for the preservation of African folklore to protect cultural identity and ensure traditional values are not lost to globalisation.

She made the call during an interview on Thursday, stressing the importance of safeguarding indigenous stories and customs for future generations.

According to Odemwingie, preserving Nigeria’s rich folklore helps prevent erosion of indigenous practices and ensures they are passed down authentically to promote cultural consciousness and shared community experience.

“The Western world celebrates Cinderella and Princess Elsa. But where are our African fairy tales, dolls, and storybooks that reflect our royalty, folklore, and cultural identity?” she asked.

Odemwingie said her flagship initiative, My African Baby, aimed to preserve African cultural heritage through storytelling, education, and creative expression for younger and global audiences alike.

“Her acclaimed works, including Ivie Ogho, Faces of Ancestry, Fulani Elegance, and Echoes Across the Humber, serve as visual narratives that connect history with contemporary African identity.

“Folklore is not just history, it is identity, resilience, and courage,” she said, emphasising that culture must remain visible and valued in the face of rapid modern change.

Beyond painting, Odemwingie said she had explored comics and virtual reality projects to engage younger audiences and make African heritage more accessible through modern digital platforms.

Her published works, she said, explored how traditional stories could be preserved through technology, ensuring culture stayed relevant, engaging, and adaptable for future generations.

“Influenced by Bruce Onobrakpeya and Vincent van Gogh, I embraced art as more than expression, it’s a duty to preserve and protect the soul of our culture,” she said.

Through her work, Odemwingie sought to reintroduce Benin folklore and African heritage to younger generations at risk of losing connection with their cultural roots and ancestral wisdom.

“At the heart of it all is this truth: our heritage must be protected. Through art and research, I’m committed to preserving our courage, wisdom, and cultural legacy,” she added.

IPMAN Urges Soludo To Tackle Multiple Taxation In Anambra

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has urged Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra to create a more business-friendly environment by addressing multiple taxation in the state.

Mr Chinedu Anyaso, Chairman of IPMAN’s Enugu Depot Community, made the appeal during the inauguration of new executive of Petroleum Dealers Association of Nigeria (PEDAN), Anambra Branch, on Thursday in Awka.

Mr Chibuike Izukanne emerged as Chairman, Ozomadu Michael as Vice Chairman, and Augustine Ejimofor as Secretary.

Anyaso, who oversees IPMAN activities in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu states, expressed concern over the increasing number of taxes and levies imposed on petroleum marketers.

He noted that the proliferation of charges was threatening the sustainability of their operations in the state.

“We used to have a consolidated tax system, but now additional levies such as business premises charges, land use fees, and Local Government Council dues have been introduced.

“The burden is becoming unbearable, and while we are still engaging with the government, we hope for a resolution soon,” he said.

Anyaso congratulated the new PEDAN leadership and urged them to remain law-abiding while safeguarding the interests of members.

In his acceptance speech, Izukanne thanked members for their confidence in him and pledged to lead in a way which benefited both members and the state government.

He also echoed concerns over the issue of multiple taxation and harassment by various government agencies.

“These challenges have continued to affect our operations. However, we will engage with the government constructively without compromising the interests of our members,” Izukanne said.

Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed shock and sadness over the heartbreaking demise of the 29-year old brilliant lawyer and exceptional personality in Nigeria’s bustling media industry, Ms Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, on Monday, September 29, 2025, during a robbery incident in her residence within the Katampe precinct of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Nelson Chukwudi, on behalf of the governor, dated October 1, 2025, noted that Somtochukwu, one of the shining stars that Rivers State bequeathed to Nigeria and the world, was not just “a distinguished Journalist, but an embodiment of kindness, humility, brilliance, resilience, and hope of a brighter future for Nigerian youths.

“Her voice on ARISE News Television was an inspiration to millions, her passion for Justice reflected in her legal mind; and her humiilty and persistence while probing for the truth, a latent pointer to her professionalism. Therefore, losing Sommie at this time is an unwholesome tragedy to her family, our dear Rivers State, and indeed, our country.

“We regret the circumstances of this unfortunate incident, knowing that the vacuum created by her death cannot be filled. We, however, take solace in the fact that the Federal Government has ordered the appropriate security agencies to ensure that justice is served in this case.
