The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt, in partnership with the Dr Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Hospital (POCCH), has announced plans for a cancer and cardiovascular health outreach aimed at promoting early detection and preventive healthcare in Rivers State.

The initiative, which includes a target of 10,000 mammogram screenings over the planned period, is expected to strengthen efforts to detect breast cancer early and improve access to specialist medical advice.

The joint health campaign will hold on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Dr Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Hospital, 120 Ikwerre Road, Rumuokwuta, Port Harcourt, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
According to the organisers, the outreach will provide cancer and cardiovascular health screenings, public health education and awareness on the importance of early diagnosis and preventive care.

A major component of the initiative is the planned 10,000 mammogram screenings, an intervention expected to support the early identification of suspicious breast changes and encourage timely medical evaluation.

Mammography is an imaging procedure that uses low-dose X-rays to examine breast tissue. It is an important tool in breast cancer screening, as early detection can improve the chances of effective treatment.

The organisers also announced a special benefit for participants, stating that individuals with positive screening results would receive their first specialist consultation free of charge.

The initiative comes amid continuing public health concerns over cancer and cardiovascular diseases, which underscore the need for greater awareness, regular medical checks and access to appropriate healthcare services.

Breast cancer remains a significant health concern among women, while cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, are major causes of illness and death worldwide. Health experts have consistently emphasised the importance of identifying risk factors early and seeking medical attention when symptoms arise.

The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt said the collaboration with POCCH was intended to encourage members of the public to take greater responsibility for their health by participating in screening programmes and seeking professional medical guidance.

The organisers urged residents to take advantage of the outreach, stressing that preventive healthcare and early detection could help improve health outcomes.

The initiative reflects Rotary’s service-oriented approach to community development, particularly in promoting access to healthcare and improving public awareness of preventable and treatable diseases.
