The Rivers State Police Command has announced the commencement of strict enforcement of Operation Velvet, a traffic enforcement initiative aimed at ensuring compliance with existing traffic laws and regulations across the state.
A press statement signed and issued by ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, the enforcement exercise, which begins on August 17, 2026, follows growing concerns over the disregard for traffic rules, which the command said had contributed to persistent gridlocks, obstruction of traffic flow and avoidable risks to motorists, commuters and other road users.
The exercise is being implemented in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, while the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure effective enforcement within their respective areas of responsibility.
The command said motorists and other road users found violating traffic regulations would face sanctions in accordance with the law, including arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.
Adepoju, however, warned police personnel deployed for the operation against extortion, harassment, intimidation, abuse of office and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
He directed officers to carry out the enforcement professionally and responsibly, while respecting the fundamental rights and dignity of members of the public.
The commissioner further warned that any police officer found culpable of extortion, brutality, misconduct or abuse of office would face strict disciplinary action.
He urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with police personnel during the exercise.
Adepoju also advised road users to desist from actions capable of obstructing traffic or endangering the lives of other motorists and pedestrians.
The command urged members of the public to report traffic-related emergencies, extortion, police misconduct, human rights violations and other incidents requiring urgent intervention through its official complaint and emergency channels.
