For the second day since the end of emergency rule in Rivers State, the people of the state have trooped out in their thousands to welcome Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the state.
On Wednesday, thousands thronged the Government House, Port Harcourt in anticipation of the governor’s return to the state, to resume duties after the six-month state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in the midst of the political crisis that rocked the state. However, the governor, it was learnt, was tied down by inexplicable official duties.
On Thursday, with feelers that the governor will come in via the Port Harcourt International Airport, thousands of Rivers people have taken up every available space at the airport in anticipation of the governor’s arrival.
The road leading into the airport has been taken over by a long stretch of vehicles by people from all walks of life.
A carnival of sorts is happening at the airport. Groups of all shades, singing, drumming, and dancing have kept the boisterous crowd in a gyrating mood, as they await the arrival of the governor.
Some of the persons who spoke with The Atlantic Bell said they came on their own volition to welcome the governor and show solidarity with him for his able handling of the political crisis.
The Leader of the Rivers Equity Group, Hon. Clapton Ogolo described the scene at the airport as “a reflection of the understanding of the governor’s stewardship before the declaration of the state of emergency and a natural love for him.
“People are happy that he is back to his seat. They agree with his decisions and actions as they relate to the peace and stability of Rivers State. What you have seen these two days is a reflection of that solidarity,” Ogolo added.
Another respondent said he was at Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday and today he has come to the airport because he is excited beyond measure to see the governor back to office.
