FG To Privatise 91 public companies

0

The Federal Government has through the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) announced plans to privatise 91 companies. The privatisation is expected to help the government raise greater revenue, create jobs and achieve overall performance on the sectors.

The Director General of the BPE, Mr. Ayodeji A. Gbeleyi disclosed this at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday September 2, 2025. He informed that two Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) and one generation company (GenCo) have been listed for the Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

He, however, did not disclose the companies or the amount to be generated from the exercise. According to him, that would be determined in the course of the exercise.

The DG added that the power sector has the potential to be a good candidate for an IPO on the Nigerian exchange, and that the agency is currently working on it.

“On the IPOs of potential DisCos and GenCo, at this stage, because of transaction confidentiality, we are not in a position to disclose two out of the 11 DisCos.

“We are also unable to disclose the GenCo that is the target for confidentiality, and to avoid causing anxiety or concern, whether among labour, workers, or the wider society,” he said.

As it affects the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), the DG stated that 23 power plants are connected to the national grid, and in most cases, as many as five could be put out of operation due to several constraints, including gas, transmission, vandalism, and illiquidity in the sector.

“The BPE is yet to state the criteria for seeking shareholders for the unmentioned assets, making it pretty difficult to guess the ones in question,” he said.

Gbeleyi, who outlined the reforms under the president Bola Tinubu administration, stated that shareholders’ loan agreements were recently executed for 10 out of the 11 DisCos. According to him, the disbursement of the loan would begin soon.

Concerning the privatisation of five GenCos, the DG informed that the transaction has been put on hold due to exchange rate volatility and other factors.

“The transaction is held in abeyance. It was in the middle of the transaction that we recorded a massive exchange volatility.

“When the transaction started in 2021, official exchange rate was around N450, but as of last year, the exchange rate was averaging N1,600 to a dollar. Today, it is N1575.

“So, the fundamentals of the transaction changed along the line, but government is still keeping an eye on it,” the DG said,

He, however, frowned that the GenCos have not keyed into the eligible customer regulation because of transmission challenges.

“Eligible customer will also need transmission capability. If you produce power in Zungeru and need to sell it in Egbin Power, there will be transmission infrastructure available for you to dispatch your power.

“It is not just about the eligibility of customers, but you must also ensure that you have the wheeling infrastructure to deliver that power to that eligible customer.”

The DG further revealed that core investors of four DisCos remained intact while seven have been restructured, stressing that the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) led to the creation of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to promote market independence and efficiency.

Concerning metering, he noted that, as of March 31, 2025, the industry had 6,468,036 meter installations.

Work On $3.5 billion Brass Fertiliser, Petrochemical Firm begins, October

0

The Managing Director of Brass Fertiliser and Petrochemical Company, Chief Ben Okoye, disclosed this on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the company’s management team to the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri at Government House, Yenagoa.

He said the visit was to formally inform the state government that work on the $3.5 billion project would commence in October this year.

Chief Okoye explained that the 10,000 metric tonne per day methanol project was delayed due to the lack of an agreement on the gas component. However, he stated that President Tinubu last October directed the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) to initiate the project, and that the agreement was signed in January this year.

He assured the state government that the necessary steps have been taken to fully implement the project and thanked the governor for constructing the Nembe-Brass road, which he noted would save the company up to $100,000 in logistics costs for transporting equipment and materials by river to the project site.

The Project Coordinator, Mr. Cyril Akika, in a presentation, listed the project’s benefits, which include economic transformation, as it would increase tax revenues, royalties, internally generated revenue, boost Bayelsa SMEs through project supply chains and equity dividends for the state.

Other benefits include infrastructure and community impact, positioning the Brass Free Zone as a global petrochemical hub, as well as the development of a port, jetty, logistics base, and a 300MW gas-fired power plant to ensure energy security, among other advantages.

Responding, Senator Diri commended the company for the visit and requested an equity stake in the Brass Fertiliser and Petrochemical Company project.

The governor stated that the state’s stance was necessary due to the negative consequences of excluding oil-producing states and local governments from the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

Senator Diri argued that the implementation of the PIA has been hindered in host communities due to irregularities in the legislation.

He noted that the disregard in the PIA of the Nigerian Constitution, which vests control of land in the state government, was a flaw that has necessitated calls for its review.

The governor expressed the hope that the petrochemical company would be different and urged the management to partner with the state government to correct the imbalance and avert conflicts in its host communities.
Diri, who commended the President Bola Tinubu administration for resuscitating the project, said it was long overdue.

He said that the Brass Fertiliser and Petrochemical Company was conceptualised in 2009 but gained some traction during the administration of his predecessor before it fizzled out again.

He also appreciated the president for his positive response to the state’s requests for federal government presence, exemplified by the revival of the fertiliser and petrochemical project.

Desperation To Unseat Jonathan Cause Of Insecurity in Nigeria – Datti Baba-Ahmed

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that the insecurity ravaging Nigeria presently is closely tied to the desperation by political actors to remove former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Datti Baba-Ahmed made this statement on Tuesday, when he featured on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

“I contested with the late former president Muhammadu Buhari in 2011. But ever since he made a security threat comment, I refused to go out with him.

“It didn’t matter if I lost the Senate seat, but I won it eventually. Buhari said, you [will all be] soaked in blood. Kaduna is my state. There was serious violence in Kaduna. Many houses were burnt.

“They went and brought people from neighbouring countries in readiness to remove Jonathan,” he stated.

2027: ‘Jonathan Eligible To Run For President

0

Although former President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to make a formal declaration on the 2027 presidential race, his rumoured ambition has continued to draw reactions from political opponents, who argue that a return bid could jeopardise the South’s chances of retaining the presidency.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Chidi Odinkalu (SAN) had urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to hand its ticket to Jonathan, arguing that his return bid would face legal obstacles since he had already been sworn in twice as president.

However, Robert Azibaola, a cousin of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has affirmed that Jonathan is fully qualified under Nigerian law to contest the 2027 presidential election, stressing that he did not need unsolicited advice.

“GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest if he chooses to. If he chooses not to yield to his overwhelming calls to contest, it would not be because he is not qualified,” he wrote on his verified Facebook page on Monday, September 1 2025.

He further reminded Keyamo and Odinkalu that Jonathan has access to a team of experienced legal advisers.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from May 2010 to May 2015, assuming office initially as acting president following the illness and death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

He later won the 2011 election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), securing 58.89 per cent of the vote.

Azibaola emphasised that his statement does not confirm Jonathan’s intention to run, but seeks to clarify misconceptions about his legal eligibility.

This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though,” he noted.

The comments from Jonathan’s cousin is coming in the heels of debates within Nigeria’s political circles, especially the opposition, which remains divided between the PDP, the Labour Party, and other political actors, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, on who is the best candidate to wrestle power from the incumbent president and lead Nigeria to prosperity.

Unpaid Allowances: Resident Doctors Issue 10-day Strike Ultimatum  …Says FG Not Sincere On Promises Made

0

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has issued a fresh 10-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and other relevant authorities, warning of an imminent nationwide strike if its outstanding demands are not addressed.

The resolution was contained in a communiqué signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, following an Extraordinary National Executive Council, E-NEC meeting held virtually on Sunday.

The association recalled that it had earlier given a three-week ultimatum in July before extending the deadline by another three weeks to allow for further dialogue with stakeholders. However, it expressed disappointment that the government has yet to fulfil its promises.

According to NARD, many resident doctors are still unpaid for their 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF). It also decried the failure to settle five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, review, along with other longstanding salary arrears.

The doctors further condemned the non-payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance, as well as what they described as the “unjust downgrading” of membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). They also faulted the persistent delay in issuing certificates to successful candidates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, NPMCN.

On state-level issues, NARD criticised the Kaduna State Government for failing to honour agreements with members at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, despite signed Memoranda of Understanding. It also accused the Oyo State Government of neglecting the welfare concerns of doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, where an indefinite strike is ongoing.

While commending states that have paid the 2025 MRTF, the E-NEC demanded immediate action from the federal government and state governors.

Among its key demands are immediate payment of the 2025 MRTF to all eligible resident doctors; Settlement of outstanding five months’ arrears of CONMESS and other salary backlogs; Payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance and commencement of specialist allowance payments to all doctors.

Others are the restoration of recognition for the West African postgraduate membership certificates by the MDCN, prompt issuance of membership certificates by the NPMCN and implementation of the 2024 CONMESS in Kaduna State and resolution of welfare concerns in Oyo State.

The communiqué stressed that all state governors must prioritise the welfare of doctors to curb emigration and ensure industrial harmony in the health sector.

“The E-NEC extends the ultimatum by a final 10 days to all relevant government agencies to meet these demands. Failure to do so by Wednesday, September 10, 2025, will leave us with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the association said.

FG Hails Simon Ekpa’s Conviction In Finland  …Vows Further Actions

0

The Federal Government has welcomed the landmark judgment of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which on Monday September 1,2025, sentenced Simon Ekpa, a self-styled pro-Biafra agitator, to six years’ imprisonment for terrorism offences.

The government said the ruling stands as a watershed moment, not only for the countless innocent Nigerians whose lives and livelihoods were brutally disrupted by the reign of terror incited and financed by Ekpa and his collaborators but also for the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Finland.

A statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said for years, Ekpa’s reckless incitement and orchestration of violence through IPOB terror activities unleashed unspeakable pain on Nigeria.

”Families shattered, businesses destroyed, children orphaned, and entire communities forced to live under fear. Hundreds of lives were lost, and many more maimed, in pursuit of a destructive and unlawful agenda that sought to undermine the peace, unity, and sovereignty of our nation.

“By upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served, the Finnish judiciary has not only vindicated Nigeria’s consistent position on this matter but also sent a clear signal to extremists everywhere that the world is watching, and justice will catch up with those who seek to destabilize societies through terror,” the statement added.

The statement noted that the Tinubu administration remains unshakable in its resolve to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and protect the dignity of every citizen.

“We will continue to mobilize every resource, diplomatic, military, and judicial, to preserve the peace, unity, and territorial integrity of our country,” it added.

“We urge all those who, under the misguidance of Simon Ekpa and others, have taken up arms against their fatherland to immediately lay them down and embrace the path of peace.

“Nigeria is big enough for all its people, but there can be no progress where violence and division prevail.

“The Federal Government also extends its profound gratitude to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the security and intelligence agencies, and the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Police, whose sacrifices, courage, and commitment continue to secure our homeland in the face of daunting challenges.

“Their service and the resilience of the Nigerian people remain the backbone of our enduring unity.

“As we mark this turning point, the Federal Government enjoins all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to work together for national unity, peace, and security of the country.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government, on Monday, said it would take further action against Simon Ekpa, following his conviction on terrorism-related charges, by a Finnish court.

The Federal Government in a statement that was signed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, said the “appropriate further actions” would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court.

Commending Ekpa’s conviction by the Finnish court, the AGF, said: “We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court.

“His conviction for the charges of terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South East.

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigerian in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration.

“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court.”

Four Years Can’t Fix Nigeria: El-Rufai Blasts Peter Obi, Amaechi

0

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has dismissed the one-term pledges made by former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, describing them as unrealistic.

Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme in Abuja, El-Rufai, who served two terms as governor, argued that four years is too short to implement credible reforms, especially in a country facing challenges as complex as Nigeria’s.

His remarks were in reaction to promises by Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Amaechi, now seeking to contest under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who both vowed to serve only one term if elected in the 2027 presidential elections.

“Politicians who make such promises often change their minds once they assume power,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor also highlighted the importance of zoning arrangements in Nigerian politics, stressing that power rotation remains an effective tool for boosting a party’s electoral chances. He recalled supporting the APC’s decision to shift power to the South during the last election cycle as part of efforts to strengthen national unity.

As political alignments gather momentum ahead of 2027, El-Rufai’s remarks cast doubt on the credibility of one-term pledges and underscore the growing debate over tenure, zoning, and the strategies that will shape Nigeria’s next presidential race.

Primary, Secondary, Technical Schools Set To Adopt Revised Curricula

0

The Federal Government has announced that primary, secondary, and technical schools across Nigeria will adopt revised curricula aimed at improving education standards and aligning learning with national development goals.

The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Bariowo Folasade, revealed this in a statement signed on August 29, 2025. The announcement was further reiterated by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, who spoke in Abuja on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa.

Prof. Ahmad explained that the curriculum review was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, the Universal Basic Education Commission, the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, and the National Board for Technical Education.

According to him, the new curricula are designed to reduce content overload and foster deeper learning, while equipping students with practical and relevant skills. He stressed that the exercise was not merely a trimming of subjects but a restructuring to enhance quality learning.

Under the revised arrangement, pupils in Primary 1–3 will take a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 10 subjects. Those in Primary 4–6 will be allowed between 10 and 12 subjects, while Junior Secondary School students will offer 12 to 14 subjects. Senior Secondary School students will take 8 to 9 subjects, and technical school students will be required to offer 9 to 11 subjects.

“The revised curricula will reduce content overload and create more learning time for students,” Ahmad said.

Although the Ministry of Education did not provide an exact date for implementation, it assured that the revised curricula will be supervised by relevant agencies to ensure a smooth transition and effective adoption across the nation’s schools.

The rollout had earlier been postponed until September 2025, following an announcement by the immediate past Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who initially stated that the new curriculum would commence in January 2025. He further explained that the reform requires the inclusion of at least two skill-based subjects in the basic school curriculum.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education system, noting that the revised curricula mark a step toward preparing students with the knowledge and skills required for national development and global competitiveness.

South African Don Wants African leaders To Avoid Costly Historical Mistakes

0

For African countries to make meaningful progress, her leaders must learn from the successes and failures of leaders from other continents.

A South African don, Dr Greg Mills said there was the need for an urgent transformational leadership to drive Africa’s progress and avoid repeating historical mistakes Lagos.

Mills, a former visiting fellow at the University of Navarra and National Director, South Africa Institute of International Affairs made the remarks during the institute’s session with its Executive Syndicate Class for top Chief Executive Officers (CEOs).

A statement by Prof. Elvis Otobo, Media Consultant, Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI) in Ogun, issued to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos noted that in his presentation, Mills drew insights from his acclaimed book, ‘The Essence of Success’ and other works, to illustrate how leadership traits from sports, business, media and politics intersect.

According to him, transformational leadership is inextricably linked to governance and political environments.

“Being an effective manager does not guarantee visionary leadership.

“Leaders must motivate teams, articulate a clear vision, pursue bold policies, and resist distractions of power or popularity.

“True leaders distinguish between tactical and strategic actions,” he explained.

He noted that at one moment, true leaders were passionate, prepared, and patient, and in the next, they demonstrated conviction, courage, communication, and compassion through their vision and energy.

Mills then highlighted consistency in core leadership qualities as one of the four “threads of success” that every leader must weave into their approach.

The don also listed the relentless pursuit of excellence, the ability to envision, plan, and communicate effectively, as well as the capacity to recognise the difference between being good and being great.

On his part, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Founder and Chairman of OOLI’s Governing Board, reinforced the message with a clarion call to the continent’s leaders.

“African countries stand the chance to benefit from quality transformational leadership. We need leaders who are committed to Africa’s infrastructural, human, and capital development,” he said.

Prof. Samuel Daramola, Deputy Chief Executive of the institute and moderator of the session, praised the depth of the discussion and reiterated OOLI’s commitment to hosting world-class speakers.

“This event marks another milestone in our mission. OOLI will continue to facilitate strategic engagements that challenge conventional thinking and empower Africa’s next generation of ethical, transformational leaders,” Daramola said.
