The Anglican Church has expanded its footprint in Rivers State with the formal inauguration of two new dioceses — Kalabari and Omoku — in ceremonies marked by prayers, pageantry and high-level attendance.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, joined clerics and traditional leaders to witness the historic moment. Fubara, a Knight of the Anglican Communion, congratulated the Church and described the development as “a sign that the work of God continues to advance.” He urged the clergy and laity to remain steadfast in service to God and humanity, and to keep interceding for peace and progress across Rivers State. The governor also reaffirmed the Church’s role as a moral compass in society.
At Abonnema Town, the Diocese of Kalabari was inaugurated, with Rt Rev Boma Peter Briggs enthroned as its pioneer bishop. In Omoku Town, Rt Rev Richard Ngozi Okpara was installed as the Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Omoku.
Primate of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev Henry Ndukuba, called on parishioners to rally behind the new bishops, stressing that God accomplishes His work through committed people.
Delivering the sermon, Bishop of Kaduna Diocese, Rt Rev Timothy Yahaya, spoke on “Focusing on God’s Mandate and Agenda.” He urged the bishops to embrace inclusiveness and fatherly leadership, ensuring that everyone under their care feels a sense of belonging. Yahaya also advised congregants to offer only sound, unifying counsel to their leaders as they take on their new responsibilities.
