Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has lauded the contributions of Hon. Justice Obietonbara Owupele Daniel-Kalio to the legal profession and the advancement of jurisprudence in Nigeria.
The governor spoke at a special valedictory court session and book launch held in honour of the retiring jurist at the Court of Appeal of Nigeria Complex, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday.
Represented by his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, Fubara described the ceremony as a fitting tribute to a distinguished judicial officer whose years on the Bench were defined by integrity, diligence and an unwavering commitment to justice.
He said the occasion marked a moment of pride not only for the celebrant but also for Rivers State, noting that Justice Daniel-Kalio’s career was characterised by wisdom, courage and fidelity to the rule of law.
“As he bows out of active judicial service, we celebrate his legacy of excellence, wisdom and selfless service to humanity. May this new chapter bring him continued fulfilment, good health and the opportunity to keep inspiring generations within and beyond the legal community,” the governor stated.
Fubara congratulated the jurist and his family for their steadfast support throughout his career and announced a donation of ₦50 million towards the book launch.

Former Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, in his remarks, recalled a long-standing relationship with the retiring justice, revealing that they were classmates in primary school. He described Daniel-Kalio as deliberate, focused and consistently ahead of his peers.
Osinbajo said he once thought his childhood friend would venture into politics but instead chose what he described as a more sober path, rising through the ranks to become a Justice of the Court of Appeal.
Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Justice Mary Odili, commended the valedictorian’s professional journey, which began at the Rivers State Ministry of Justice. She said his erudition and industry distinguished him early in his career, earning him respect both at the Bar and on the Bench.
In his response, Justice Daniel-Kalio described the judiciary as the fabric that holds the nation together, warning that the erosion of judicial integrity would amount to bidding farewell to the rule of law.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Fubara, Osinbajo, the President of the Court of Appeal and his brother judges for their support and encouragement throughout his years of service.
