Tinubu Holds Fresh Talks With Wike, Fubara As Rivers Truce Remains Unclear

President Bola Tinubu has again intervened in the protracted political crisis rocking Rivers State, holding another closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Presidency sources confirmed that the meeting took place on Sunday night at the President’s official residence in Aso Rock, Abuja.

However, details of the deliberations and any agreements reached were not disclosed, leaving the outcome of the engagement shrouded in uncertainty and fuelling fresh political speculation.

The renewed intervention comes amid lingering tensions over political control and leadership recognition in Rivers State, as well as unresolved moves by a faction of lawmakers to impeach Governor Fubara. The lack of official communication after the meeting has raised questions about whether the long-running dispute is nearing resolution or merely entering another phase of quiet bargaining.

The talks also follow reports that President Tinubu had previously advised Governor Fubara, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to recognise Wike — a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart serving in the APC-led Federal Government — as the party’s political leader in Rivers State, a suggestion that has remained contentious within the state’s political establishment.

Sunday’s meeting is believed to be at least the fourth time the President has personally stepped in to mediate between the two political heavyweights since the crisis erupted, underscoring growing concern within the Presidency over stability in the oil-rich state.

Despite repeated presidential interventions, the absence of a clear, publicly articulated framework for reconciliation has continued to generate uncertainty, with political actors and observers closely watching for signs of compromise or renewed confrontation.

For now, the substance of the latest talks remains hazy, keeping Rivers State’s political future firmly in the realm of speculation as stakeholders await concrete signals from the Presidency or the parties involved.
