Senate Summons Emergency Session Amid Backlash Over Rejection Of Electronic Results Transmission

Nigeria’s Senate will reconvene on Tuesday for an emergency plenary session following intense public criticism over its recent rejection of a key amendment to the Electoral Act.

In a statement issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, lawmakers were directed to attend the sitting scheduled for 12 noon on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the instance of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026,” the statement said, adding that all senators were “kindly requested” to be present.

The emergency session comes days after the Senate, on February 4, rejected a proposed amendment seeking to make the real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory. The decision triggered widespread condemnation from civil society actors and pro-democracy advocates, who argue that the move weakens electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former education minister Oby Ezekwesili and the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere were among those who faulted the Senate’s position, warning that it could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Legal challenges have also been threatened, with senior advocate and human rights lawyer Femi Falana indicating that the amendment’s rejection raises constitutional and democratic concerns.

Although the agenda for Tuesday’s sitting has not been officially disclosed, the emergency reconvening has fuelled speculation that senators may revisit the contentious amendment in response to public pressure, a move that could significantly shape the balance between incumbency interests and demands for verifiable voting technology in Nigeria’s democracy.
