Chidi Eze Makes History As First Ikwerre, Nigeria-Born Judge In United States

History was made in New York as Chidi Eze was sworn in as a Civil Court Judge, becoming the first Ikwerre and Nigeria-born individual to attain a judicial position in the United States.

The formal swearing-in ceremony marked a significant milestone not only for the Nigerian diaspora but also for the Ikwerre community in Rivers State.

Judge Eze officially assumed office on January 1, 2026, while a ceremonial celebration to commemorate the achievement was held on January 19, 2026, drawing dignitaries, community leaders, and well-wishers.

Speaking shortly after the event, Judge Eze expressed profound gratitude to the Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair, Rodneyse Bichotte-Hermelyn, for recommending him, and to New York State Governor, Kathy Hochul, for approving his appointment.

“I am humbled by the confidence reposed in me, and I assure the public that I shall discharge my duties with utmost fidelity and integrity,” he said.

An indigene of Elele in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Judge Eze described his elevation to the bench as both a personal honour and a collective responsibility. He characterised the oath of office as a sacred commitment to uphold justice with fairness, independence, and impartiality.

“I am the first Ikwerre Nigeria-born judge in America. This is a challenge, an obligation, and a sacred trust to make the Ikwerre people proud,” he affirmed.

The event was attended by notable personalities across political, legal, and community spheres, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Reacting to the historic moment, Peace Owhor Ogunleye, Global Executive Director of Medical Visions for Peace (MVP), hailed Judge Eze’s achievement as a testament to excellence and service.

“Today, we celebrate integrity, leadership, and the rising representation of the Ikwerre people in positions of justice and authority. MVP and the entire community stand proud with you,” Ogunleye said.

Judge Eze’s appointment is widely regarded as a landmark in diaspora representation and a symbol of expanding opportunities for Nigerians in global public service.
