‘They Just Landed Me A Love Letter,’ Fubara Jokes Amid Impeachment Storm

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on Saturday injected humour into the deepening political tension in the state, describing the impeachment notice against him as a “love letter.”

Speaking as special guest at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament in Port Harcourt, the governor made a veiled reference to the impeachment move, saying: “This 2026 that I thought would have been the finest, they just landed me a love letter.”

The light-hearted remark drew laughter from the audience, but Fubara quickly struck a serious note, insisting that political distractions would not derail his administration.

“That notwithstanding, we must move on and carry on the responsibilities as a government. We will continue to support everyone who means well for Rivers State,” he said.

The governor vowed that he would neither support nor condone any action capable of undermining peace and safety in the state, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of his government.

He also reaffirmed his mandate, declaring that he remains the governor of Rivers State and will continue to deliver on the promises made to the people.

Fubara expressed satisfaction that the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament was held for one week without any security incident, describing the peaceful conduct of the event as further proof that Rivers State is safe for residents and visitors alike.

Meanwhile, the impeachment process took a procedural turn as the office of the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, confirmed receipt of a letter from the State House of Assembly requesting the constitution of a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

Chairman of the House Committee on Petitions, Information and Complaints, Dr Enemi George, said the Chief Judge had acknowledged receipt of the documents, which included the notices of allegations, relevant procedural guidelines and supporting materials. He urged residents to remain calm and not be swayed by “those who want to truncate our democracy.”

However, the Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has issued an interim injunction restraining the Chief Judge from receiving, considering or acting on any impeachment-related communication from the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, or members of the House, pending further proceedings.
